GIRL IN BOX is a new devised work of transgressive theatre that crosses
lines of genre, character and time. On one hand it is a radical re-working of Euripides' The Bacchae, containing
illusions to the classic text and others, on the other hand it is firmily situated in the present day and questions our assumptions
of societal boundaries.
Nina and her younger brother Alan , the adult children of a military
father and housewife mother are fleeing their past. Abused in thier childhoods, they drew so close together they broke
one of societies last remaining taboos. They've now settled into an insular, claustraphobic world of their own in an
isolated town in Northeast England. One day, however, Alan decides to break the wall with the outside wall and places
an advertisement on an internet bulletin board.
Three new tenants arrive. Theresa is a teenage prostitute from an unknown Asian
country. Matt is a corn-fed military brat from Fort Worth, Texas, who shares an eerily similar
past to the two protagonists and on whom Alan develops a fixation. And finally, there is a strange,
older woman who seems to know too much, about whom little is known and who wears her make-up in a strange Clown-like
style. Matt and Nina fall for each other as Alan attacks Theresa - but why does Matt, who shares Alan's flat seem to
be acting younger by te day? And just who are these new people in this world?
Nina and Alan's world can no longer hold it's secrets and explodes with violence, driving Nina to
commit an act she was always destined for.
